"Long-lost Friends"

Each of us has had the experience of meeting someone and instantly being drawn to them as if we knew them, as if they were an old friend. This an affinity, a connection to the person that spans uncountable lifetimes. It is possible because we carry the fond memory of them in our most subtle consciousness. They do the same.

When old friends meet again, that deep memory is awakened and it is as if time had never passed...

I sometimes wonder if that is true for myself and Buddy (feline pal). I have only had him in my life for a little over a year since I rescued him from the Toronto Humane Society but there is a deep connection that seems to be much older as we learn about one another and share the quiet times together. This indescribable synergy - connection to those around me, be they humans or otherwise, is also the primary reason why I am a vegetarian.

My friend always looks for affairs outside his marriage because he is attracted to women all the time. His wife told me that her life is like hell. I tried to help her understand that her husband had connection to those ladies in his previous life times. She asks me if there is a way to stop him from doing bad deed.
Venerable Wuling, what is your advice?

Mari, I discussed this with another nun and she explained that the wife owes a karmic debt to her husband. So their relationship is one where he has come to "extract repayment of a debt." The wife needs to cultivate merits through her practice and dedicate them to her husband. This can help to reduce her debt.
